CSO-SUN PREDICTS A RISE IN THE COST OF LIVING FOLLWOING THE HIKE IN FUEL PRICES

By Michael Kaluba

The Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition Alliance -CSO-SUN- has predicted that the cost of living for a family of 5 will soon go beyond K10, 000 after the hike in fuel prices that has already resulted in price hikes for essential goods and services including transport.

The cost of living for a family of five as measured by the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflections-JCTR- Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket for November 2021 stood at K8, 145.28.

In an interview with Phoenix News, CSO SUN Country Director Mathews Mhuru says this will be adjusted upwards significantly with the anticipated high cost of food, essential goods and services and has since challenged the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission-CCPC- to be active and protect consumers against excessive hikes in prices in the wake of the hike in fuel pump prices.

Mr. Mhuru has also lamented the lack of a clear explanation from government on the measures developed and meant to mitigate the impact of the high cost of living following the hike in the fuel pump prices.

He adds that currently, low income earning households are frustrated at the escalated cost of living who feel the new dawn government has backtracked on its promise to better their lives especially that strategies to mitigate challenges remain unexplained.
