COPPERBELT POLICE COMMAND REQUEST TO MPS IN THE PROVINCE TO INFORM POLICE OF THEIR ACTIVITIES IN THEIR AREAS OPPOSED

By Michael Kaluba

Nkana Constituency Independent Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu has rejected calls by the Zambia Police Command on the Copperbelt for parliamentarians to notify law enforcement officers whenever conducting activities in their respective areas.

Mr. Mpundu has wondered why the police is adamant on this when the ruling from parliament by both the past and current speakers of the National Assembly is consistent in guiding that this should not be the case.
On Wednesday, Acting Police Commissioner for Copperbelt Province, Sharon Zulu re-echoed the need for members of parliament to notify police when visiting their constituencies citing a violent incident that recently occurred in Kwacha constituency as reasons officers need to be alerted.

But Mr. Mpundu in an interview with Phoenix News wonders the amount of notifications a single Member of Parliament would need to make, given that their jobs require a lot of engagement with constituents.
He has reminded the police that they are law enforcers and do not make laws themselves hence the need for them to heed to the ruling from the legislative arm of government.

And Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates-DEGHA- National Coordinator Gerald Mutelo is of the view that law enforcement officers and Members of Parliament need to work together on this matter and is urging the Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba to make his officers understand that the issue is not about permitting the MPs but providing security.
