Zambia coach Carol Kanyemba is hoping to secure a first-ever away win in the 2024 U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers when they face Uganda in the third round, second leg match in Kitende.
The encounter will take place at St. Mary’s stadium with kick-off set at 15h00 CAT.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference Thursday morning, Kanyemba said her side was determined to pick its first win in East Africa after falling short against Tanzania in the second round. Zambia beat the Twiga Stars 5-0 and lost 1-0 away but qualified 5-1 on aggregate.
“We lost our game against Tanzania because of a few things that we have worked on and coming to this game, we have corrected the mistakes and we pray that we turn the tables by doing much better than we did last time,†Kanyemba said.
“We are ready for the game, we have been training for it, we played the first leg and we have prepared for the second leg as well so we are ready for the game. Our girls are really inspired by the senior team that has achieved a lot in recent years and they want to emulate what the Copper Queens have done.â€
The Copper Princesses lead 2-0 from the first leg courtesy of goals from Namute Chileshe and Ruth Mukoma. Captain Blessing Zangose Zulu says her team is ready to replicate Sunday’s performance and secure a fourth-round ticket.
“We are very much ready and we have already worked on our mistakes with my teammates and the morale is very high and we are very much ready for Friday’s game,†Zulu said.
Winner over both legs will face either Morocco or Algeria in the fourth and final round for a place at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be staged in the Dominican Republic. Morocco are enjoying a 4-0 first leg lead.
