… Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency Urges vigilance among citizens regarding the consumption of unregulated beverages

Lusaka, Zambia24 (19-05-2024) – The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has raised a red flag, urging vigilance among citizens regarding the consumption of unregulated beverages, following reports of fatalities in Southern Province where fatalities have been reported due to the consumption of homemade beer, Chijabi.
Brian Hatyoka, Acting Manager – Communications and Public Relations at ZCSA told Zambia24 in a statement that suspicions have arisen that harmful additives such as methylated spirit and shoe polish are being incorporated into Chijabi’s production, posing severe health risks including organ damage and respiratory distress.
Hatyoka stated that the agency is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter in collaboration with relevant state institutions.
“A comprehensive statement will be released once the investigation is complete. He urged citizens to report any illegal production or distribution of beverages to safeguard consumer well-being,” he advised.
According to Hatyoka ZCSA is increasing enforcement measures and public education initiatives to address the illicit trade of beverages.
Under the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017, Hatyoka observed ZCSA regulates various beverages, requiring manufacturers, importers, and traders to obtain authorization before supplying their products.
“As a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, Hatyoka advised that ZCSA remains committed to administering, maintaining, and enforcing compulsory standards to uphold public safety, health, consumer protection, and environmental preservation.
He said citizens are encouraged to prioritize their well-being by choosing regulated beverages that meet approved safety standards.
“By doing so, they can avoid the risks associated with consuming unregulated beverages like Chijabi. Remember, your health and safety are paramount, and ZCSA is working tirelessly to ensure that only safe and regulated products are available in the market,” he suggested.
