By Chansa Kunda

Zambia has been allocated 24 slots at the 2022 Commonwealth games to be staged in Birmingham, England.

National Olympic Committee of Zambia Secretary General BONIFACE KAMBIKAMBI says the 24 slots have been awarded under the open allocation to Athletes only by the organizers of the games.

KAMBIKAMBI has told ZNBC Sports News in an interview that the number was arrived at following Zambia’s track record at the events and the performance of Athletes in previous years.

He said seven Sport Disciplines, among them swimming, boxing, athletics, judo, squash, badminton, and cycling will be considered under the 24-slots given.

KAMBIKAMBI said team sports like the rugby sevens, netball, hockey, and handball will be taking part in qualifying events to earn places at the Commonwealth games.

He said the association has so far begun preparations for the games and that the committee will take full ownership of the preparations in January ahead of the games that commenced on July 28 to August 8 2021.

And the Zambia Athletics -ZA- who has been allocated six slots from the 24 said the number is minimal and will suppress the quest to mint medals.

ZA President ELIAS MPONDELA said the Association however plans on sending 20 athletes.

MPONDELA has since called for a shift in the manner that Associations are led to prepare and consulted over the games.
