Comesa Market Gutted

The scourge of fires burning down markets was back to haunt Zambians with Comesa and Buteko Market in Mufulira burning down.

Barely 24 hours after Buteko Market was gutted by an inferno, Lusaka’s Comesa Market burnt down with the fire brigade failing to quench the inferno.

COMESA market in Lusaka has gone up in flames.

Police had to fire some shots to disperse some prospective scavengers that wanted to take advantage of the fire to loot property.

Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo rushed to the scene to assess the damage.

In Mufulira Property worth thousands of kwacha was gutted after an inferno swept through Buteko Market on the Copperbelt.

The fire believed to have started in the early hours of Thursday morning around 01:00 swept through the market reducing makeshift stands to ashes.

The inferno has affected mainly the vegetable and furniture making sections.

Mufulira Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Manager Thandiwe Tembo said fire officers from Mopani Copper Mines and Mufulira Municipal Council Council only managed to pur out the fire around 04:00hrs.

Tembo said the cause of the fire is yet to be established adding that a team has already been constituted to ascertain the cause.

“Yes I can confirm that an inferno has swept through Buteko Market and property worth thousands has been reduced ashes, we are yet to ascertain the cause of fire which was only put out at around 04:00 ours by our fire officers with the help of Mopani Copper Mines,” Tembo stated.

And Mufulira Mayor Gift Mushinge has described the incident as unfortunate.

He said he was saddened especially that the market was a source if livelihood for many people in the district.
