Coffin Sellers In Profits As Covid-19 Deaths Rise

By Lukundo Nankamba

Coffin sellers in Lusaka have recorded a sharp rise in sales following an upsurge in the number of deaths the country has witnessed in the past few weeks due to covid-19.

Following a recent revelation by the ministry of health that the country has reported 407 COVID-19 deaths in the last 3 weeks, this rise in deaths has seen an overwhelming boom in business for coffin traders who also offer the service of preparing bodies of the deceased for burial.

Despite the number of deaths that are worrying and saddening, it is business as usual for the men and women trading in coffins.

Phoenix staffer Lukundo Nankamba who talked to those conducting business at the University Teaching Hospital –UTH-mortuary area was told that they are unable to meet orders as they are running out of stock within a short period of time and in some cases have to turn away bereaved families who want to buy coffins as they can no longer meet the high demand.

“And as I spoke to the coffin traders, my attention was caught at the desperate and depressing situation at the UTH mortuary of how the number of brought-in dead bodies were coming through within the short period I spent there.” Ms Nankamba narrated.

Christopher Mtonga is Lusaka City Council Public Health Director who says they have in the past week alone given out 610 burial permits.

As emphasized by the ministry of health in order to curb the Covid 19 pandemic and reduce deaths there is a need to observe the five golden rules which are masking up in public, maintaining physical distance, wash hands frequently or use sanitizer, avoid crowds, seek medical attention early if symptomatic
