CIVIC LEADERS SUBMITS MOTION ON BAN OF BONANZA’s

By Blessings Chibuye:

A Civic Leader in Lusaka has submitted a motion to the Lusaka City Council for councillors to ban slot machines popularly known as Bonanzas used for gambling in townships.

Kalingalinga Ward 36 Councillor MUKUBESA NYONI says children between 5 and 15 years are now getting addicted to Bonanzas because of lack of effective regulation by operators.

Mr. NYONI told ZNBC News that allowing children to continue participating in gambling is breeding petty thieves for coins who with time will graduate to hard-core criminals.

He has expressed optimism that the Councillors will do the needful and support the motion.

Mr. NYONI has further charged that Bonanzas are affecting effective implementation of the free education policy because some children prefer spending time gambling than in class.

But the Zambia Gaming Association -ZGA- says banning Bonanzas will support unemployment and poverty in townships.

ZGA Chairperson GIFT SIMUSAMBA said this is because Bonanzas have created over 15-thousand jobs for young people across the country while operators contribute to the national resource envelope.

Mr. SIMUSAMBA however warned ZGA members operating Bonanza Machines in townships and allowing under age children on their premises that they risk having their licenses revoked.
