Citizen’s View: ZRA Is Misguided On The Mast

In view of the statement by the Zambia Revenue Authority that The Mast is not registered with them, I hope the institution is aware that The Mast is not the name of the company but the name of the product.

This newspaper is published by Oracle Media Productions Limited. There is a distinction between a product and the company and its not always the case that the product name carries the same name as the company.

For example, the National Mirror newspaper was a publication of Multimedia Zambia. Times of Zambia is a publication of Times Printpak (Zambia) Limited. Cocacola is a product of Zambia Bottlers. I further hope that Zambia Revenue Authority is aware that there is no law in Zambia that compels registration of a newspaper.

I can begin publishing a newspaper today and just avail a copy to National Archives of Zambia and State House without necessarily registering the publication. However, what would be expected of me is to remit taxes for the sales of the newspaper.
