Chitimukulu mourns Munkonge

ZANIS—Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people has described the death of Prof. Lupando Munkonge as a great loss to the nation and the Bemba Royal Establishment (BRE).

Speaking to ZANIS today, the traditional leader said the country has been robbed of a reservoir of knowledge who contributed positively to the growth of the healthcare system in Zambia.

He noted that the region will remain indebted to Prof. Munkonge for setting up a  private hospital in the region, Hilltop Hospital in Kasama and also establishing a milling plant which contributed to creation of jobs for the locals.

“Prof. Munkonge will also be missed for promoting the Bemba culture through his contributions towards the successful hosting of the annual traditional ceremony ukusefya pa Ngw’ena. “He Noted.

Chief Chitimukulu also said that he was a humble man and a pillar to the royal family who always extended his hand to everyone.

And Kasama Hilltop Hospital workers said they received the untimely passing on of their founder with grief and sorrow.

Joseph Luhanga, a Clinical Officer General described the late Prof. Munkonge as one who dedicated his life to improving the welfare of the people through the establishment of private hospitals in the country.

Mr Luhanga said Prof Munkonge will be remembered for giving opportunities to a number of people to work in the private sector at a time when jobs are difficult to find.

And a retired midwife Loan Mulambya who has been at the hospital since 2017 revealed that Prof. Munkonge gave retired health personnel a chance to work by employing them so that they could continue to support their families.

Ms. Mulambya who described the late as a mentor said he was the first local person to open a private hospital which is servicing a lot of people in the region and beyond.

Prof. Munkonge, a renowned medical practitioner and trainer who died on Saturday, started his early life in Kasama District.

Government has declared Thursday 31stMarch, 2022 as a day of national mourning in honor of the late Prof. Mukonge who died at the age of 85.
