CHITEME CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF FOREST RESOURCES

By Wilson Mulinda- National Development Planning Minister Alexander Chiteme has called on Zambians to engage in Community Forest Management to protect and increase productivity of the forest resources.

Mr. Chiteme says illegal cutting of trees, setting fires and cultivation must not be done in declared local and national forests .

Mr. Chiteme has also called on traditional leaders across the country to lead by example and put an end to the trend.

He was speaking when he handed over the Community Forest Management rights agreement to Banki and Malambalala communities in Kasenengwa District of Eastern Province.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni People said he will continue to champion the fight against deforestation in his area.

Chief Madzimawe said the agreement has come at the right time so that communities get to know the importance of preventing deforestation.

And Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project National Coordinator Tasila Banda said the project has incorporated communities to help put an end to illegal cutting of trees.

Dr. Banda said the project targets to reach out to many communities before it elapses next year.
