The Chipata High Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man of Chipangali District to three years imprisonment with hard labour for stabbing to death the husband of his lover.

Lusaka judge Koreen Zimba who is sitting in Chipata jailed Mathews Phiri of chief Chanje’s area after he pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter.

Facts of the matter are that, Phiri caused the death of Jason Banda in May 2022.

The deceased separated with his wife in January 2022 following a domestic quarrel.

On 15th February 2022, the deceased followed his wife and discovered that she was with the convict in the house.

This led to a fight and it was at this point that the convict stabbed the deceased with a knife leading to his death on 18 May 2022.

In mitigation, defence counsel Jonas Matende from Legal Aid told the court that the convict was remorseful and regrets his action.

Judge Zimba said the sentence is with effect from the day of arrest.
