Chilubi School Construction Nears Completion

By Brian Mwale- Expansion works at Santa Maria Day Secondary school on Chilubi Island is nearly complete with only 10 percent of works remaining.School Head Teacher Joseph Kunda says the move will enhance access to secondary education for people from surrounding schools, who currently have to walk to other far flung areas.Mr. Kunda says the upgrade of the school has already had a positive impact on the community with some having been enrolled at the Nursing School on the Island after leaving the school.Briefing Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya who is part of Government’s Cluster on Education and Health during his recent visit to the school, Mr. Kunda however appealed for learning materials and computers while thanking government for the works done so far.And John Chibangu, who is Chilubi Chairman for the Zambia Education Enhancement Program -ZEEP- said the project is ready to start phase two of the expansion works.The works will include an administration block, classrooms, and girls’ toilets with the monies already in the project account.Mr Chiabngu however lamented challenges of moving construction materials from the harbour to the school, and has appealed for a van.And Dr. Chilufya said he will engage his counterpart from Education and other members of the cluster on addressing the challenges which include the need for more teachers.He however reassured the administration of President Edgar Lungu’s resolve of not leaving any child behind in accessing quality education.
