Chiefs Salary Hike Ill Timed – TIZ

Chief PutaTransparency International Zambia (TIZ) has described as ill-timed the awarding of salary increments to tradition leaders by the government.

TIZ president Lee Habasonda says making such a move during an election period may be interpreted as an attempt by government to manipulate the chiefs

Habasonda says the salary increments should have been awarded much earlier or after the general election.

He however, states that given the fact that this decision has already been taken, TIZ is urging traditional leaders not to be tied by the salary increments they have received to the extent of thinking that they are obliged to support the ruling party.

Habasonda says if tradition leaders realize that the salary increments they have been awarded are intended to influence them, they should not compromise their role of being non partisan.

Habasonda says this is especially that the electoral Act does not allow chiefs to participate in active politics.
