Change of mind? Asanovic still finalising AFCON qualifiers squad after backlash for calling injured Chaiwa, benchwarmers Sanjase, Mayembe & Mukeya

Chipolopolo Boys coach Aljosa Asanovic has had a change of mind following a backlash from fans for calling inactive players.

It has now emerged that the Crot is ‘still finalising his squad’ for the upcoming CAF 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Comoros.

“If you have noticed, FAZ hasn’t said anything with regards to the squad. The list which is circulating was sent prematurely,” said a Football House source.

“The bosses [including the coach] are upset that it was sent [to clubs] because there are issues around some of the players,” a ZamFoot Crew source added.

The ZamFoot Crew understands that fans’ reaction also contributed to the ‘change of mind.’

Questionable call ups

Gregory Sanjase – The on loan Zesco United goalkeeper has been a warming the bench the whole season only came to life last month after first choice Ian Otieno got injured.

Shemmy Mayembe – Since his return from Ukraine last year, Mayembe is a third choice right full back at Zesco behind Simon Silwimba and Sam Mkandawire.

Jimmy Mukeya – Zobrigo is one of the highly young talents in the country but he rarely started games in the National First Division for Napsa Stars. He spent more time on the bench than on the field.

Miguel Changa Chaiwa – The teenage defender cum midfielder has been out injured for the past three weeks subsequently missing Atletico Lusaka’s league matches.

Zambia will be away in Abidjan on June 3 on match day 1 against Ivory Coast, and host Comoros at Heroes Stadium on June 7.
