CCPC Challenged To Make Public, Findings Of Investigations In The Alleged Cartel In Fixing Of Cement Prices

By Michael Kaluba

The Zambia Consumer Association -ZACA- is demanding that the Consumer Competition and Protection Commission -CCPC- makes public, the findings of investigations in the alleged cartel in the fixing of cement prices to avoid speculation regarding the high prices of the commodity.

ZACA Executive Director Juba Sakala has also noted that institutions such CCPC and the Zambia Bureau of Standards among others, need to conduct thorough investigations into alleged unfair trading to ensure consumer protection especially in the wake of the high commodity prices.

Mr. Sakala has since challenged the government to enhance the human and financial capacity of these institutions to improve on efficiency and effective execution of their mandate to protect the consumer.

He adds that the inadequate capacity and a lack of adequate resources and personnel to provide oversight by the CCPC and other allied institutions, the consumer remains at risk of unfair trading and consumption of unsafe foodstuff.

And Mr. Sakala says the government should address the factors escalating the cost of production as opposed to alleging sabotage.
