Cashew Project Sets Up Demo Plots

January 20, 2020January 20, 202027The Cashew Infrastructure Development Project -CIDP- has embarked on the programme to establish demonstration plots for improved cashew seedlings in 10 districts of Western Province.Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo says the cashew research demo plots are meant to equip cashew farmers with knowledge and skill in crop management and pest control.Mr. Katambo says the cashew research demo plots are critical in information dissemination to farmers, if they are to produce good quality cashew nuts.Mr. Katambo was speaking in Nalolo District when he toured the cashew research demo plot that has been established in the area.And, Project Consultant Professor Peter Masawe said the cashew research demonstration plots will help Zambia become the best cashew producing country in Southern Africa.Professor Masawe said the demo plots will be used as farmer field schools, where farmers will converge to learn the cashew management processes.And, Western Province Minister Richard Kapita said the production of cashew seedlings will only be done by Farmer Training Institutes -FTC- under the Ministry of Agriculture.Mr Kapita said this is to ensure that the cashew seedlings are produced by a trusted source.
