CALL TO REPEL CLAUSE UNDER WORKERS COMPENSATION FUND CONTROL BOARD WHICH REQUIRES RETIREMENT OF WORKERS WHO TEST POSITIVE FOR TB

BY Tinkerbel Mwila

The Tropical Diseases Research Centre -TDRC- is proposing for the repelling of the clause under the workers compensation fund control board which stipulates that when an employee tests positive to tuberculosis, he is retired immediately upon being issued with a medical certificate.

TDRC director Dr Gershom Changwe has told Phoenix News that this clause has caused some miners who are mainly affected by the disease due to their nature of work from disclosing their TB status for fear of losing their jobs.

Dr.Changwe states that according to a study carried out, majority of TB cases are prominent in mining towns namely Copperbelt and north western provinces. He notes that the continued existence of this clause is a barrier to ending the TB in Zambia.
