CALL TO HONOR VICTIMS OF SESELI MINE DISASTER BY ENSURING SUSTAINABLE SMALL-SCALE MINING HINGED ON SAFETY

Opposition Leadership Movement President Richard Silumbe says Zambia should honor the victims of the Seseli mine disaster in Chingola, by ensuring sustainable small-scale mining hinged on safety and productivity.
Dr. Silumbe says the disaster at Seseli mine was avoidable if government considered empowering the youths with capital, tools and a conducive working environment as opposed to designating them as illegal miners.
Dr. Silumbe tells Phoenix News that describing young people who have an interest to mine in Zambia with simple tools as illegal miners, has continued to expose them to dangers and challenges that jeopardize their safety.
He says the country must begin to accord as much respect and incentives to Zambian youths interested in mining as is given to foreign investors if Zambia is to maximize on production.
So far, one person has been rescued alive while 11 others died and were buried on Monday at a mass ceremony in Chingola
