CABINET NODS SELF REGULATORY MEDIA BILL

Cabinet has approved in principle the introduction of a bill in parliament to establish a self-regulatory professional body for Journalists.

Chief Government spokesperson Dora Siliya says the trend where anyone can practice Journalism without adhering to minimum standards cannot go unchallenged.

Ms. Siliya says there is great desire by stakeholders to save the credibility of the media.

She says the establishment of the Zambia Council for Journalist will provide a legal framework that will allow the profession to thrive especial in this era of Social media.

And Cabinet has approved the Media Development Policy in order to deal with challenges affecting the growth of the media.

Ms Siliya says the policy will address challenges such as inadequate regulation, skills and infrastructure.

She says the advent of electronic media need appropriate regulations and capacity building in order for the sector to grow.

Cabinet has further approved the National Information Communication Policy.

Ms Siliya says the policy will address the challenges that government is facing as regard to intra-communication and communication with the public.

She says apart from addressing the irresponsible use of social media the policy will enhance communication between the public and government.

This is contained in a statement made available to ZNBC News in Lusaka.

And Cabinet has approved in principle the introduction of the Bill to stablish the Professional Film Makers Guild of Zambia that will coordinate the activities of film makers in Zambia.

Ms Siliya said the film industry does not just provide means of culture preservation but has potential to contribute to National development.

And Cabinet has agreed in principle to amend the Teachers Professional Act through an act of parliament.

Ms. Siliya said the idea is to redefine the mandate and roles of the council.
