Bury roadside mining pits

ZANIS-Government has directed that mining pits on the Great North Road in Mkushi district be buried with immediate effect.

Mkushi District Commissioner JONATHAN KAPUNGWE says the mining activities cannot be allowed to continue because they threaten the well being of public infrastructure and rivers in the District.

Mr. KAPUNGWE says there are some concerns pertaining to illegal mining which is negatively impacting on water bodies such as Mkushi and Chibefewe rivers.

He says the rivers, which traverse through the two Forest Reserves, are important to the economy as they are irrigation reservoir for sustainable farming in which Mkushi District provides 40-percent of Zambia’s wheat crop.

The Mkushi District Commissioner says apart from causing harm on the rivers and Forest Reserves, some of the mining activities are posing a threat to major infrastructure such as the Great North Road.

Mr. KAPUNGWE said this during a meeting with Mining proprietors, saying that Government is concerned about the environmental damage that is being caused by mining.

He complained that deep pits have been dug very close to the road in areas such as Kasalamakanga, adding that the resultant seepage from water logging would damage the road.
