Body of Zambian killed in the Russia-Ukraine war to be repatriated

The Body of LEMEKANI NYIRENDA, the Zambian National who died in the Russia-Ukraine war will be repatriated on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister STANLEY KAKUBO says Mr. NYIRENDA’s body will be dispatched on Saturday, December 10th for Lusaka by the Zambian Mission in Russia.

Mr. KAKUBO says Government through his ministry requested to know why Mr. NYIRENDA was recruited when he was a civilian and learned that he was pardoned conditionally.

In a Ministerial statement delivered in parliament today, Mr. KAKUBO said on December 5th, Government was informed that Russian laws allow for pardoning in exchange for participation in military activities and later given amnesty.

The Minister disclosed that when Mr. NYIRENDA was convicted, the Zambian mission was granted two consular visits annually for Mr. NYIRENDA, of which the first visit was made.

He said the Zambian mission wrote to make consular visits to Mr. NYIRENDA this year which were received with silence until they visited necessary offices, only to learn that he had died at the war front while serving his sentence.
