Asanovic sweating on the fitness of Mwepu ahead of AFCON qualifiers

Zambia could be without influential midfielder Enock Mwepu for the Ivory Coast 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

The Chipolopolo Boys will face host Ivory Coast and Comoros on June 6 and 14 respectively as they seek to qualify for next year’s finals.

Having missed the three previous AFCON editions, the Copperbullets’ task is set to be even harder on the injury front, with Aljosa Asanovic sweating on the fitness of Mwepu.

Mwepu picked up his latest groin injury in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Wolves, and subsquently missed the 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United.

Mwepu is highly rated by Brighton coach Graham Potter

Despite having an injury ravaged season in which he has just made 17 league appearances, the Zambian has impressed for Brighton.

Ahead of the qualifiers, Asanovic is understood to be keeping his fingers crossed and hoping that his prized asset will be fit in June.

In the last AFCON qualifiers, Mwepu only featured in the 2-1 away win over Mauritania.
