Anthrax :Eastern and Southern Province Get Vaccines

The Veterinary Department in Eastern province has so far received 15,000 doses of vaccines to protect the livestock against the Anthrax.

Provincial Veterinary Officer ARTHUR MUMBOLOMENA says the remaining 5,000 doses will be expected in the province soon, to enable them vaccinate all the livestock in Lumezi district.

Dr. MUMBOLOMENA said in an interview with ZNBC News that the vaccination of the animals is expected to start next week as the department targets to vaccinate cattle, goats and sheep in the district.

And Southern Province Minister, CREDO NANJUWA has called for tight security measures against the illegal movement of livestock.

Mr. NANJUWA says the province is under a huge threat with the outbreak of the Anthrax disease.

He was speaking when he called on Kazungula District Commissioner, ELIAS SIAMIBILA at his office in Kazungula.

Mr. NANJUWA said the continued impounding of trucks carrying illegal meat by the Zambia Police is a good move that will help in the fight against Anthrax in the province.

And Kazungula District Health Director, BELITA ZULU said the district has so far recorded 17 cases of the anthrax in humans.

Dr. ZULU says Bombwe in Chief Musokotwane’s area is leading with 12 cases.

Meanwhile, Kazungula District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator, WEBBY CHIBOMBO says the district has 130 unverified deaths of cattle and 48 verified deaths.

Dr. CHIBOMBO says two veterinary camps in Kazungula district have been affected by the outbreak and the district has so far received 33,000 doses of the anthrax vaccine..
