ALCOHOL ABUSE ON THE INCREASE -PSYCHOLOGIST

By Katwishi Bwalya

A Lusaka-based Psychologist has observed that there has been an increase in the number of people abusing alcohol and drugs during the Covid-19 period.

Alice Sakala, who is also an Administrative Manager at Great North Road Rehabilitation Center says her center has seen a 40 percent increase in the number of people being treated for alcohol and drug addiction.

Ms. Sakala says the center is on average attending to a minimum of 25 people for drug and alcohol addiction.

She has attributed the increase to what she termed stress.

Ms. Sakala says a lot of Zambians are stressed as a result of the Covid-19 and have resorted to drugs and alcohol.

She was speaking when IRIS KAINGU Foundation Chairperson, Iris kaingu toured the facility in Lusaka this morning.

And Ms. Kaingu called for more public rehabilitation centers for people to have access to treatment facilities.

She has also targeted to raise one million kwacha for the completion of a psychiatry center at Ndola Teaching Hospital saying mental health has become a serious issue in the country and needs concerted efforts.
