9 months no pay for Workers at National Housing Authority

Workers at National Housing Authority (NHA) have gone for nine months without salaries, an employee has told Zambian Eye.

The Unionised Workers have since vowed to boycott Labour Day celebrations next week on Monday.

Management has however mobilised to go and march and get allowances, the employee who chose to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation tells Zambian Eye.

“The question is, Is it in oder for management to go and March paying themselves allowance, buying themselves suits getting missing lunch.”

When reached for a comment Union branch Chairperson Joseph Shakantu confirmed the development which he said was now beyond management at NHA.

“Indeed workers at NHA are now at seven months without salary. The last time they got paid was in September 2016, ” Shakantu said. “The matter is beyond management, it is a government issue and the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure has promised has promised that he is doing something to revitalise NHA.”

Shakantu said the financial problems at NHA have been there since 2009 and that workers have suffered a lot. He disclosed that workers are currently on go slow because of the situation.

On labour day celebration, Shakantu says it is a cost and feels if there is any coin should go towards looking into the plight of the workers.

NHA has 361 Unionised Workers.
