50 PEOPLE DIE OF RABIES ANNUALLY

By Josiah Mpofu:

Fifty people die of Rabies every year in Zambia.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE says government in collaboration with other health partners has since started the process of formulating a rabies control and elimination strategy.

Mr. CHIKOTE says this in line with the Global Alliance for rabies control plan of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.

He said this in Chilanga District when he received a donation of 50-thousand doses of Rabies vaccines from the World Organization of Animal Health -WOAH worth 15-thousand Euros.

Mr. CHIKOTE said rabies is a deadly disease that requires more attention from government and cooperating partners as it affects many animals.

He noted that the disease will be prevented and eliminated if over 70 percent of dog population is vaccinated and will reduce government’s expenditure on human rabies vaccines.

And Rabies Programme Coordinator TENZIM TENZIM emphasized the need to control and eliminate the disease as more than 99 percent of human cases of rabies are due to bites from infected dogs.
