12-year old boy loses leg following a snake bite

By Mushota Mpundu

A 12 year-old boy of Chauluti in Kalabo District, Western Province has had his right leg amputated after he was bitten by a snake while herding animals.

NALISHUWA NALISHUWA’s parents first took him to a traditional healer and after two weeks his leg started rotting.

Uncle of the victim MARTIN MULELE says NALISHUWA was under the care of the named traditional healer for two weeks, until the boy’s leg started rotting, after which he was surrendered to his parents.

Mr. MULELE says a team from the Zambia Flying Doctor Services which is in the area has taken over the case and amputated NALISHUWA’s leg.

And Dr. MUKUKA CHIPASHA, a surgeon has told ZNBC News in an interview that the surgery went well and that the boy is recovering.

Dr. CHIPASHA appealed to the public to always go to the hospital early and not depend on herbal remedies.

Meanwhile, Zambia Flying Doctor Services Public Relations Manager NAMBULA SILILO said the medical team has successfully performed the surgery and will later provide crutches to help ease the boy’s movements.
