100 Mini grids to be built

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Government says over 100 Mini grids will be built in the next 18-months in an effort to reduce the energy deficit in the Country.

Energy Minister PETER KAPALA says this will be done through the private sector working with the Rural Electrification Authority –REA- and other partners such as the European Union and World Bank under the Grid Fund for Africa.

Mr. KAPALA says this is part of the plan to develop 1,000 mini grids to transform Zambia into an energy sufficient country.

He says the mini grids will go beyond taking electricity to rural areas to transforming communities.

Mr. KAPALA adds that this will especially help smallholder farmers to engage in mechanised farming.

He said this in speech read on his behalf by Fisheries and Livestock Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE at the Zambia Decentralized Renewable Energy Conference in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Acumen Chief of Strategic Initiatives JIWOO CHOI has praised government for recognising the critical role that renewable energy will play in achieving Universal Energy Access for the country.

Ms. CHOI said this will foster a strong market signal that will lift businesses and investor confidence.
