ZCTU Castigates Affiliate Unions Publicly Endorsing Political Parties And Individuals Running For Public Office

By Michael Kaluba

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions -ZCTU- has castigated affiliate unions that are publicly endorsing political parties and individuals running for public office, describing the trend as divisive and wrong.

ZCTU Deputy Vice President Ellaston Njovu says while the resolve of the labour movement is to work with the government of the day, no biased declarations should be made outside the fundamental principles which include formulating labour laws, collective bargaining and other core union business.

Mr. Njovu has advised unions in the habit of publicly endorsing political parties and individuals running for public office to stop denting the image of ZCTU and their individual unions arguing that while the executive of such unions makes these pronouncements, it may infringe on the rights of their members who may not agree.

The Mine-Worker Unions on the Copperbelt including NUMAW, MUZ and UMUZ have publicly declared their endorsement of President Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front as direct appreciation to the government takeover of Mopani Copper Mines from Glencore and the ongoing attempt to oust Vedanta from KCM.
