Zambia in three-days of national mourning

Zambia on Thursday begun a-three – day of national mourning for the late Salome Kapwepwe a freedom fighter and wife to former Vice president Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe.

Salome died in her sleep Tuesday night from the family farm house in Chinsali at the age of 90. She was a key figure in the Liberation Struggle for Independence.

President Edgar Lungu has declared three days of National mourning starting today upto Saturday when Salome is expected to be buried.

The flags are flying at half mast while all entertainment programmes have been suspended with radio and television station paying solemnly music.

President Lungu will travel to Chinsali on Saturday to attend to the burial of Salome who will be buried next to her late husband, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe who died in 1981.

And a powered delegation of Freedom fighters led by Mama Chibesa Kankasa will tomorrow Friday leave Lusaka for Chinsali for the funeral of Salome Kapwepwe.

Mama Kakansa who was the only woman in the first UNIP Central Committee has confirmed that she and other freedom fighters will be part of the funeral of the late Zambian icon.
