What next for Avram Grant after Chipolopolo’s premature AFCON exit

Following the Chipolopolo Boys early exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, it’s only logical that the football community ask questions.

The big elephant in the room is the fate of the head coach Avram Grant.

A number of coaches have been sacked and others have resigned following poor showing by their teams at the Continental showpiece.

However, Avram Grant, may be a different case altogether as the Zambian FA may be looking to keep the experienced gaffer at the helm of the 2012 AFCON champions.

Grant was appointed as Chipolopolo head coach in December 2022 after the job was left vacant following the departure of Croatian gaffer Aljosa Asanovic two months earlier.

The former Chelsea boss penned a two year deal (which comes to an end in December) with an option to extend.

Since his arrival, Grant has only lost two matches one in the World Cup qualifiers against Niger and the other against Morocco on Wednesday.

Football House could be looking at stability which is an earlier technical bench that has been lacking since as far back as 2013 when Herve Renard left the job.

Zambia has had 11 coaches since Herve Renard left the job in 2013 (Beston Chambeshi having two stints).

The Israeli gaffer reign has been decent with qualification to AFCON for the first time since 2015 as the major highlight.

In his eleven games incharge, Grant has managed 5 wins, four draws and losing just two games. The team has managed to score 20 goals while conceding ten.

Football House is yet to make a statement on the matter.

The Chipolopolo Boys will now turn their focus to the World Cup qualifiers as they return to action in June in search of their maiden appearance at the global showpiece.

Winners of each of the nine Groups will automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ 2026.

The four best runners-up (from the Groups) will play in a CAF Play-Off tournament. The winner of the CAF Play-Off Tournament will play in the FIFA Play-off Tournament.
