By Patricia Mbewe

Residents of waterfalls area in Chongwe district have petitioned the Ministry of Mines to close operations at united quarries limited which is situated within the area.

The petitioners who are residents of the same area holding titles of their respective lands within the same locality are concerned with the mining activities including blasting, excavation and other related mining activities being conducted in the area.

In a petition to the Mines Minister, the residents who are being represented by Nicholas Chanda and Associates say the mining activities have become a danger to them because the blasting of rocks being conducted there are likely to cause damage to their respective housing units.

The residents further say by reason of the said blasting, dust emissions evolve around the houses, posing a health hazard to them.

The affected residents add that excavation has been so massively done to the extent that this has affected water reticulation in the area and resident are now consuming contaminated water and that the excessive and exacerbated blasting is causing noise pollution.

The residents say it is for this reason that they request the Mines Minister, Richard Musukwa to immediately withdraw united quarries limited licenses and halt operations.
