UNZA Lecturers Call Off Go-Slow

University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers has called off their go-slow after a meeting with the Labour Commissioner and UNZA Management.

According to a memorandum signed by UNZALARU General Secretary Kelvin Mambwe the weeklong go-slow had been called off with parties involved agreeing to go back to the negotiating table.

UNZA had been plunged into industrial disharmony following lecturers downing tools last week over outstanding salary negotiations among other issues.

“We would like to inform students and the general public that at Special General Meeting of the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union held this afternoon (Tuesday), the membership unanimously resolved to call off the go-slow that was initiated last week. This decision follows a fruitful meeting held this morning (Tuesday) between the Labour Commissioner and representatives of both Management of the University of Zambia and UNZALARU one that was occasioned by Management’s application to the Labour Commissioner to terminate the Recognition Agreement with the union,” Mambwe stated in the memorandum.

“In a ruling that was welcomed by both management and UNZALARU, the Labour Commissioner guided the two parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and resume good faith negotiations on all points of disagreement. In this spirit, the membership decided that it would be appropriate to call off the go-slow to pave way for the said dialogue.”

Students will be happy to back to class with the academic calendar fairly on course to conclude in December.
