UNPAID TEACHERS HOPEFUL THEY WILL BE PLACED ON PAYROLL TOGETHER WITH NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS

By Michael Kaluba

Numerous teachers who have been waiting to be placed on the payroll from as far back as 2020, are yet to start receiving their salaries from government and are hopeful that they can be placed on the payroll before or together with the newly recruited over 30,000 teachers.

Some of the affected teachers who spoke to Phoenix News, have complained that they now lack confidence in the system that has promised to address their issue since 2020 and further that, there have been public officers demanding as high as K15,000 from these desperate individuals with a promise to expedite the process.

And a concerned organization, Cornerstone Voice of the Youths Director, Wedson Zulu says a preliminary assessment by his organization shows that just about 13 percent of the affected teachers waiting to be placed on the payroll, have been recruited under the recently announced 30,496.

The Ministry of Education issued a Minute No. MoE/9/6/3 dated 27th April, 2022 halting the process of placing teachers appointed under replacements and 2021 net recruitment on the payroll until the verification of the academic qualifications was done to determine the authenticity of the documents.

Meanwhile, a notice dated July 9, 2022, issued to all Provincial Education Officers by Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary-Administration, Noriana Muneku, disclosed that the ministry concluded the verification exercise and directed that Provincial Education Officers submit to her office, reports of teachers placed on the payroll by 12th August, 2022 and provide reasons or justifications for those who may not be placed on the payroll by the same date.
