Three more Zambian stations join TopStar dish bouquet, StarTimes ON App

TOPSTAR as the public signal distributor has continued to promote the local TV broadcast industry by adding three Zambian TV stations to the satellite dish bouquet.
TopStar vice president Cliff Sichone has disclosed that the public signal distributor is excited to be carrying more Zambian channels beyond the digital terrestrial transmission network.
“We have the widest terrestrial signal coverage that carry over 20 indigenous Zambian TV Stations over a network of 64 transmitters across all ten provinces,” Mr Sichone says.
“TopStar is excited to announce that in the past week – three Zambian TV stations have been added to the satellite dish service. These are Agribusiness News (ABN), Diamond and Fresh TV.
“And in line with the trends in digital TV, the three TV stations are also available on the StarTimes ON App. Which provides video on demand and live streaming,” he says.
The StarTimes ON App can be downloaded from Google Play and the App Store for i-Phone users. This APP is optimized to use less data when streaming and if you link your account to your decoder you can enjoy access to more channels.
Currently the StarTimes ON APP, previously branded as the StarTimes APP, has been downloaded 360,000 times in Zambia.
Mr Sichone says the introduction of Zambian channels to the StarTimes ON APP is a sign that the Zambian TV industry is not being left behind in the digital business market.
“TopStar is not only the public signal distributor, but also runs a subscriber management business that requires constant innovation and customer retention. By introducing ABN TV, Diamond TV and Fresh TV to the StarTimes ON APP, we are ensuring that we play our part in the digital business market.”
Mr Sichone adds that the StarTimes ON APP is taking advantage of the growing business opportunities that internet based services provide.
“The StarTimes ON APP is available to TopStar subscribers and non-subscribers as a Live TV and video on demand platform. Meaning that your mobile device can be used as an extension of your decoder allowing you to catch up on current affairs or entertainment videos from the palm of your hand,” said Mr Sichone in an interview.
The three channels added to the mobile APP are Agri-Business News (ABN) TV, Diamond TV and Fresh TV. These join the Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation channels of ZNBC TV1 and ZNBC TV2.
Video streaming is a growing trend on the Pay TV market.
Africa’s leading digital TV operator, StarTimes launched StarTimes ON in 2018 as part of its Over The Top (OTT) business, officially declaring that online video streaming service of the media giant is “ON” in the market.
StarTimes provides Terrestrial TV (DTT) and Satellite TV (DTH) services to millions of customers in the African market spanning 30 countries.
Now, with the popularisation of smartphones and mobile internet access in Africa, more and more Africans, especially young people, get used to watching streaming videos on phones. StarTimes decided to actively embrace the era of internet and pioneers its online video streaming service (OTT) with forging the “StarTimes ON” brand for the online business, Africa’s No.1 online video streaming service, dedicated to providing ultimate entertainment and enriched experience.
The conception of “ON” comes from “ON Air” and represents Live TV service. “ON” is “Online”, which means users will be connected with the world at anytime and anywhere with internet. “ON” also means “On the top”, showing that StarTimes ON always provides top viewing experience to users.
StarTimes ON will cover all OTT service of the company, including Live TV, VOD (videos on demand) and short videos, etc.
OTT has already been one of priorities in StarTimes’ strategy, and huge R&D and operation resources have been invested on it. StarTimes ON, together with DTT and DTH, will be 3 major content distribution platforms of StarTimes.
With StarTimes ON, the Chinese based firm aims to become a comprehensive videos service provider in African market.
