THIRD LINE TREATMENT OF HIV TO RECEIVE A BOOST AS RITONAVIR COMES

By Prudence Siabana

The Ministry of Health is in the next 10 days expected to have in supply RITONAVIR, one of the drugs used in the third line of HIV treatment.

This follows complaints by recipients of care on Antiretroviral Therapy –ARV- who are supposed to receive Ritonavir for 3-6 months but instead are now being given drugs for one month only.

Ministry of Health Director Infectious Diseases Professor Lloyd Mulenga has told Phoenix News that the ministry has run out of the drugs that acts as a booster hence the rationing but has indicated that only a few HIV patients are on the third line drugs.

Professor Mulenga who has regretted the shortage of the drug says its unavailability is as a result of the challenges in the procurement system at the ministry of health and has since assured the recipients not to panic as everything is being done to address the situation.
