TASINTHA Recruits and Transforms 10,000 Sex Workers Across the Country

TASINTHA Coordinator, Miriam Sakala says the organization has recruited over 10,000 female sex workers throughout Zambia of which about 70 percent have been transformed.

The Tasintha programme empowers women and children in hazardous situations.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of 10 girls from one of Tasintha’s centers in Chipata compound in Lusaka, Ms. Sakala says the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has partnered with Tasintha to help sensitize girls on the need to be tested and how to look after themselves.

She say the ten girls will be equipped with sewing and knitting machine and peanut butter making machines to help them get started in addition to each receiving a K500 grant plus premises paid for in advance where they will all be operating from located in the community they are coming from.

And officiating at the graduation, Mandevu Member of Parliament, Jean Kapata has encouraged the Tasintha Programme not to relent, but continue encouraging women and girls to sustain themselves in a dignified manner as opposed to engaging in commercial sex.

Ms. Kapata says commercial sex comes with its own dangers such as contraction of sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and many other diseases.

Ms. Kapata who is also Lands Minister has also urged Tasintha Programme to also create awareness among policy makers, youth leaders, teachers and the general public about the situation and needs of women and children engaged in prostitution and its dangers.

And Tasintha Board Chairperson, Professor Nkandu Luo has assured the graduates that her organization will monitor their progress as they embark on utilizing the skills they have acquired.
