TALC Warns Of Rise In HIV/AIDS Infections In Zambia

By Michael Kaluba

The Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign -TALC-, an HIV/AIDS non-governmental organization has warned that Zambia risks recording an upswing in HIV and aids infections if people continue shunning health centres for sustainable access to treatment in fear of the covid19 pandemic.

The organization has also disclosed that its assessment has shown a reduction in the number of people testing for HIV in almost all centres, a situation that may lead to a drop in the strides the country has made so far in the fight against the disease.

In its message ahead of World Aids day which falls today, 1st December, TALC Programs Officer Owen Mulenga observes that the shift of mind and resources from HIV to Covid19 by a number of cooperating partners among other factors has led to some people living with HIV shunning clinics to check for their viral load, cd4 count while others have stopped taking their medication.

Mr. Mulenga has since called on the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in the fight against HIV to quickly develop modalities to invigorate and scale up the fight against HIV and the provision of allied health services despite more resources going towards the fight against Covid19.

Zambia today joins the rest of the world in commemorating world aids day under the theme: “ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic: resilience and impact”.
