Suspension Of UPND Campaigns In Kanyama Politically Motivated

By Leah Ngoma

The opposition UPND has described the decision by the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- to suspend indefinitely all manner of political campaigns for the party in Kanyama constituency in Lusaka district as unfair and politically motivated.

ECZ has suspended UPND campaign activities following the conclusion of investigations by the commission in the incident in Kanyama constituency in which two lives of Patriotic Front supporters were lost under gruesome circumstances.

Addressing the media in Lusaka this morning, party spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa is concerned that the UPND was not given an opportunity to be heard as it should be whenever there is a complaint of political violence.

Mr. Mweetwa says the party expected the commission to suspend campaigns for all the involved parties in order to restore peace unlike singling out the UPND.

He has however attributed the violence that has been witnessed in the ongoing campaigns to the breakdown in the rule of law under the current regime.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mweetwa has alleged that the ECZ has signed a memorandum of understanding with the local government service commission in an effort to recruit pf aligned polling agents that will help rig the August 12 general elections.

But when contacted, PF Media Director Antonio Mwanza has rubbished Mr. Mweetwa`s claims and has advised the opposition, political party spokesperson, to stop maligning institutions of governance after anticipating defeat in the August elections.
