The National Union Of Small-Scale Farmers In Zambia –NUSFAZ- has described as fair, the announced K150 buying price per 50kg bag of white maize by the Food Reserve Agency –FRA-.

The FRA yesterday announced that it will in this crop marketing season buy white maize at K150 from the K110 at which it was buying the crop last year while soya beans will be at K500 per 50kg and paddy rice at K200 per 40kg bag.

Reacting to the announced prices in an interview with Phoenix News, union Executive Director Ebony Lolozhi said the maize price is reasonable although farmers had expected a much higher price owing to the ever-increasing cost of production.

Mr Lolozhi adds that farmers however have the chance to negotiate for better prices for their crop with private buyers.

And the Millers Association of Zambia –MAZ- has commended the FRA for coming up with a fair maize price saying farmers have been rewarded for their hard work and effort put in the production of maize.

MAZ president Andrew Chintala however clarifies in an interview that the price that the FRA has set is their own buying price and does not dictate to other players involved in the buying of the grain.
