Speaker Declares Mukata’s Seat Vacant

SPEAKER of the National Assembly Dr Patrick Matibini has declared the Chilanga parliamentary seat vacant following the sentencing to death of its member of parliament Keith Mukata.

Speaker Matibini has therefore written the Electoral Commission of Zambia chairman to make arrangements for a by-election.

In his letter, speaker Matibini states that according to articles 72 (2) (b) of the Constitution of Zambia Act, chapter 1 of the Laws of Zambia, the vacancy occurred following the sentencing to death of Keith Akekelwa Mukata, a member of parliament for Chilanga constituency.

“I wish to inform you that in accordance with Articles 72 (2) (b) and 70 (2) of the Constitution of Zambia Act, chapter 1 of the Laws of Zambia, a vacancy has occurred in the elected membership of the National Assembly following the sentencing to death of Mr Keith Akakelwa Mukata, a member of parliament for Chilanga parliamentary Constituency by the High Court for Zambia on Wednesday 28th February, 2018,” read the letter in part.
“In view of the foregoing, I shall be grateful if arrangements can be made for a by-election to be held in Chilanga parliamentary constituency.”
