Soweto Market Traders Reject Plans To Set Up A Huge Waste Collection Point Next To A Water Tank

Some traders at Lusaka’s new Soweto market have appealed to health authorities and the Lusaka city council to intervene in a matter where market management plans to set up a huge waste collection point in an area which is next to a water tank which supplies water to the entire market.


The traders have told phoenix news that the previous market management halted initial plans to set up the rubbish bin at the same location as it is also near to shops housing restaurants and selling points for various food products.


They however said despite being advised against the move, acting news Soweto market manager, Collins Mulenga and one of his colleagues only identified as ba Kangwa, a patriotic front official have insisted on going ahead with their plans.


The traders who have also complained of intimidation in the market fear that if plans to put up the waste collection point go ahead, water supplied to the entire market will be contaminated leading to a break out of water borne diseases.


But when reached for a comment, new Soweto market acting manager, Collins Mulenga has told phoenix news that there are no plans to move the market rubbish bin.
Mr Mulenga has insisted that the waste bin will continue to be outside market.
