Social Cash Transfer beneficiary drowns after drinking spree

A 68-year-old man of Chief Kapichila’s area in Lundazi district in Eastern Province has drowned in Kakumba stream.

Jastone Phiri of Kajowola Village who was coming from a drinking spree met his fate on Friday between 17:00hrs to 18:00 hrs when he attempted to cross the flooded Kakumba stream on his way home.

Msuzi Ward Councilor, Daudi Phiri who is also the son to the deceased has confirmed the incident in Lundazi.

Mr. Phiri disclosed that on the fateful day, the deceased who was one of the beneficiaries of Social Cash Transfer (SCT) program had gone to Kakumba pay point to get his money and was later seen drinking at a named bar within Kakumba Trading Centre before he met his fate.

He said his body was found yesterday morning floating in an upside position in Kakumba stream, adding that the deceased he has left behind 10 children.

The civic leader further said the body of the deceased is lying in Lundazi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from Eastern Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sharon Zulu proved futile as her phone went an answered.
