Rupiah Banda gets burnt in a fire after a drinking spree, police say

RUPIAH Banda of Mazabuka has sustained multiple burns in an inferno which swept through 31 grass thatched makeshift huts in Chimwaikila fishing village in the district.

And Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says 26 year old Banda sustained multiple burns while goods worth millions of kwacha were also destroyed in the inferno which occured on Friday around 23:00 hours.

“It was reported that on the material date and time, the victim and his colleague  Tom other names not known came from a drinking spree and begun cooking food from one of the huts, now gutted, using firewood inside the thatched hut.

Katongo said whilst in a drunken state, the victim fell asleep and was only awakened by the heat which was eminating from the burning structure whose roof was crumbling inwards.

And Katongo said Tom who is the owner of the house where the fire started from is on the run as police have opened  an inquiry in the matter.
