RTSA intensifies traffic patrols on highways to curb road accidents

THE Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA)  Chief Executive Officer Gladwell Banda says the agency has intensified traffic law enforcement patrols on highways to curb road accidents.
Following President Edgar Lungu’s directive to intensify its patrols in view of the increase in road fatalities, Banda said the agency has increased its presence on all highways and mostly targeting at un-roadworthy vehicles, excessive speeding motorists, drunken drivers among others.
He added that other road traffic offences that will be targeted in the patrols include compliance to statutory documents such as Driving Licences, Road Licences, adherence to fastening seat-belts and nonuse of cell phone while driving.
He said RTSA in collaboration with the Zambia Police Traffic Section will be conducting motorized and non-motorized patrols and will also ensure that all broken down vehicles causing obstruction on the roadway are removed.
“I have with immediate effect directed all RTSA Provincial offices to get on the ground to ensure that we put an end to the escalating incidences of road traffic accidents especially on the highways,” Banda said.
He said the Agency has further enhanced road safety education, to promote the use of proper signage of triangles to alert other motorists whenever there is a broken down vehicle on the roadway.
