Prevailing Political Violence Attributed To Failure By Govt To Act On Recommendations Made After Findings Of Commission Of Inquiry Into Political Violence And Voting Patterns From 2016

By Michael Kaluba

The Foundation for Democratic Process -FODEP- has attributed the prevailing series of political violence in various parts of the country to a failure by the government to publish and act on the recommendations made after the findings of the commission of inquiry into the political violence and voting patterns from 2016.

FODEP Executive Director George Chimembe tells Phoenix News that stakeholders in the electoral process would have prepared adequately against political violence and unfavorable voting patterns had the government published and acted on the findings of the commission of inquiry.

Mr. Chimembe says some of the recommendations could have helped the Zambia police plan on how to curb political violence ahead of this year’s general elections.

He feels because the findings of the commission of inquiry implicated the patriotic front, it has not been treated as actionable despite the country using resources for the process which could have been channeled to other important needs such as paying resident doctor’s dues.

There have been a number of incidents of political violence in some parts of the country since campaigns officially commenced especially between the PF and UPND resulting in injuries and some property being broken.
