Political Parties Gear Up for Kasenengwa Nomination

Political Parties taking part in the September 6 by-elections are this week expected to announce their candidates.

The two major political parties PF and UPND have finished their primary elections and are waiting for their secretariat to officially announce the adopted candidates.

The ruling PF several applications from Philimon Twasa, Sesio Banda, Charles Banda, Gideon Zulu among many others while Dr Sitima Banda is among those that have applied for adoption on UPND ticket.

Other political parties had also not announced their candidates that will file nomination papers this Thursday.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Victoria Kalima who was also Gender minister who passed on in June.

Kasenengwa Constituency which has close to 49 000 voters had been held by female MPs since 2006 when former first Lady Vera Chiluba Tembo defeated then UNIP MP Timothy Kafa Nyirenda.

Kalima first won the seat in 2011 on MMD ticket and later defended it on the same ticket in 2014 after her election was nullified.

In 2016, Kalima retained the seat but on PF ticket which she held until her death.

Kasenengwa which was recently declared a district has four chiefs that include senior Chief Nzamane, chief Madzimawe, chief Mishoro all of the Ngoni people and chief Chikuwe of the Chewa people.

Going by the people that have shown interest to stand, Kasenengwa is set to have a male MP.
