POLICE FIGHT RUNNING BATTLES WITH YOUTHS AT BLACK MOUNTAIN

By Michael Kaluba

Confusion at Kitwe’s infamous black mountain has entered day 3 with police this morning fighting running battles with irate youths who ran amok after they were denied entry to the mining site.
It is reported that the youths who were initially allowed to hand pick chrome for 3 hours daily since Monday, were today denied entry after sustained confusions at the mining site to allow for a better system to be put in place.

The Kitwe-Ndola dual carriageway near the black mountain, was for the second day running, blocked with tyres and stones by protesting youths until police intervened and contained the situation by dispersing the angry mobs with tear gas canisters.

Yesterday, some youths complained that the new model of operation at the black mountain is non-inclusive, favours political cadres and big business people as opposed to the community and described the 3 hours given to pick chrome as inadequate.

All traffic in and out of Kitwe was this morning diverted to the only other route through Nkana East towards Ndeke, leaving various motorists who were urging government to quickly address the matter, frustrated in traffic jam.

Earlier, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe told Phoenix News that he was going to address the matter as soon as possible.
