PeP requests Supreme Court to withdraw Chifire contempt case

The Opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) has written to the Supreme Court requesting that the Court considers withdrawing the contempt of court cases against Gregory Chifire and others.

Party President Sean Tembo says the Court is acting as Complainant, Prosecutor, Adjudicator and Executioner.

Mr. Tembo says with such a scenario, the accused persons are unlikely to receive a fair hearing as there is inherent conflict of interest in the Supreme Court’s four-in-one arrangement against the accused persons.

He says the party is cognizant of the fact that in the said matter, the Supreme Court is probably acting within the confines of the rules that govern the operations of the Court, but that the position of his party is that this four-in-one arrangement is against the rules of natural justice and therefore inimical to the wider interests of the Republic.

Mr. Tembo says the party’s fear is that should the Court proceed with this matter, it risks losing its good standing and reputation as the general public may perceive it as a Kangaroo Court.
